Invisible Geographies: A Study of Migration and Male Homoeroticism in Tijuana through Spinozist Affects.

Rodrigo Perez Toledo

Affect-based theory considers that there are behaviors that cannot be fully understood from rational perspectives. This study follows such theories and seeks to understand the relationship between people and spaces. From the analysis of Spinozist Ethics, I consider that bodies are influenced by previous interactions that lead them to specific acts; and that space is a mode of substance perceived through attributes and modes that affect people and their relationship with space, sexuality and migration. This study, focused on men attracted to other men, concludes that affects (actions and passions) dictate people’s relationship with space; that the sense of space is personal, relational, volatile and invisible to other people; and that most of the interviewees do not feel comfortable with the “gay” identity, but identify as such because it escapes the stigma in Mexican society.
