The articles in this issue explore the “why” and “how” of participatory research, as well as its effects. An interdisciplinary, multi-voiced dialogue based on the collective experience of the TRYSPACES research partnership, the texts reflect the complexity of participatory research, beyond the current injunctions to collaborate and mobilize knowledge. What does it really mean to practice participatory research? What can we learn from putting it into practice in institutional, intellectual and political contexts as varied as Mexico, Quebec and France? This issue offers a set of critical reflections on the university and its social role, on how we can overturn the dominant order of knowledge production and reconfigure the hierarchization of knowledge, while achieving a certain hybridization of the postures and statuses of participating individuals. How is participatory research set up? How are spaces opened up for participation and reflection? What tools and methodologies are used (cartography, popular education, digital media and many others)? How can we report on this process and the results of research that combines scientific, artistic, technical and professional languages?
