This essay narrates the trajectory of Psicocalle Colectivo, a transdisciplinary university initiative to understand from neuroscience, anthropology and psychology the phenomena of street life and the use of psychoactive substances. The narrative is guided by the premises set out in the Declaration for the Transition to a Culture of Peace in the 21st Century. An action-research model is proposed, framed by a notion of a culture of peace that considers marginalization and exclusion as little visible violence, and education for peace and compassion as ways to connect with otherness and to use scientific knowledge in everyday life. The model argues that social action develops empathic skills, a sense of agency and introspection that favor social commitment, reflection on human rights and a politically responsible scientific work that defines university students as peace builders.
