Migraciones internas en México. Miradas desde la Geografía Humana

Guillermo Castillo Ramírez

Within the vast universe of migratory processes, internal migration plays a very important role. Today, and worldwide, the number of internal migrants is much higher than that of international migrants. In 2015, the International Organization for Migration, in the World Migration Report, estimated that, while there were approximately 232 million international migrants, there were about 740 million internal migrants on the planet. In the 20th century, the most important internal migrations were rural-urban -due to economic reasons- and especially those destined for the main city -the country’s capital- and the megalopolises -such as Guadalajara and Monterrey-. These dynamics generated an increase in urbanization, as well as processes of concentration and population growth in large cities. This work contributes reflections on diverse processes of contemporary internal migrations in Mexico in the 21st century and from disciplinary perspectives of economic and social geography, using qualitative and quantitative approaches at different scales -national, regional and local-, emphasizing the spatial and territorial processes involved in internal migrations.
