This dissertation focuses on the forms of social regulation that shape material conditions and practices in the city’s public spaces. The work is set in the urban village of Santa María Chiconautla, on the outskirts of Mexico City. The work aims to contribute to the search for solutions to the acute problem of violence against women. The first part sets the context of this extreme violence, in the municipality with the highest rate of femicides in the country, by proposing an evaluation of available statistics, as well as an analysis of the type of actions on the subject in different sectors of society, but mainly in public policies in the legislative and executive spheres. The second part analyzes the perception and incidence of crime by exploring women’s everyday conditions and the social organization of the population. The work concludes with recommendations for countering urban violence against young women through care programs.
