TRYSPACES
These videos present the results of collective workshops and videos produced in Barcelona’s Raval district. Seeking to move beyond the debate between the desertion of public spaces by some young people and over-occupation by others, Alice Lancien proposes to approach the relationship between working-class youth and urban spaces through their role in the production of public spaces. Most studies of the production of urban public spaces have focused on central, emblematic spaces, looking at public action from the point of view of the players involved. If relationships with space play a part in shaping young people’s lifestyles, how are these lifestyles reconfigured in a context where public spaces are increasingly regulated? How do young girls and boys living in gentrifying inner-city neighborhoods contribute to the production of urban spaces? How do they find their place, and what place does public policy give them?
