At a time when electoral news is pointing the finger at the high level of abstention in working-class neighborhoods, and when many analysts see this as a sign of disinterest in politics, particularly among young people, our participatory research invites us to shift our perspective and reconsider preconceived ideas. While young people from working-class neighborhoods do not participate much in the electoral game, our work clearly shows that these young people are neither disinterested nor passive when it comes to politics.
Our research was carried out from 2017 to 2021 in 10 neighborhoods in the Île-de-France region. It involved researchers, managers of youth services and associations, and around ten young people per neighborhood. Together, we co-authored the book Jeunes de quartier. Le pouvoir des mots, which reflects these collective reflections. The book is accompanied by a website on which the work carried out is published by theme.
