Case study on peseros and sustainable mobility in Mexico City. Peseros, or small privately-run trucks, are notorious in the city for, among other things, the reckless and sometimes illegal behavior of their drivers, most of whom are young men who exceed speed limits and violate traffic regulations. In recent years, as part of efforts to improve urban mobility in the city – and with the aim of combating the “disorder” and illegal practices that pervert public transport – government officials and private sector experts have proposed various reforms. The most recent includes the formalization of bus lines and drivers, transforming them into companies by 2022, according to the official timetable. In addition to renewing vehicles and reducing the number of buses on the road, the new companies will have to expose and train drivers to comply with driving rules and regulations.
